I admit when I was approached by Simon Malone, the owner of Ka’chava, to sample and review his product that I was a little reluctant. Meal replacement shakes typically just aren’t my thing. Plus the stats on the Ka’chava website seemed just a little too good to be true.

When the product arrived, I tried it a few different ways, just chocolate, just vanilla, mixed with water, and then mixed with almond milk. Then chocolate and vanilla mixed together as Simon suggested. All of the above were good, bordering on delicious.

Nutrients

Typically I find vegan protein or meal replacement shakes to be chalky, overly flavored with stevia or just generally unpalatable. Somehow Ka’chava has managed to undo all my previous hesitations while adding tons of nutrients and superfoods that you normally don’t find in a regular vegan protein shake.

It’s super easy to blend in a shaker cup and literally tastes great plain, but I’ve found a couple of ways to jazz it up that I think you’ll like too.

Chocolate Banana Milkshake

Ka’chava Chocolate Banana Milkshake

  • 12 ounces unsweetened coconut milk, from a carton
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2 scoops Ka’chava Chocolate Tribal Superfood

Method: add all to blender, blend until smooth and creamy. This is so easy, yet so tasty.

These snack bars store well in the refrigerator and are great for when you want a quick snack with plenty of protein and nutrients and without any yucky ingredients:

  • 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed, or 1 1/2 cups home cooked chickpeas
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter
  • 2 scoops Ka’chava Vanilla Tribal Superfood
  • 4 soft medjool dates, pitted
  • 1/4 cup brown rice syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon powdered stevia
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 cup vegan chocolate chips, I used Lily’s brand that are sweetened with stevia
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil

Method: Add chickpeas through salt to a food processor and process until everything is very smooth and mixture rolls up into a ball. Remove dough from food processor and press into an 8×8 pan lined with parchment paper. Put the dough in the fridge to chill for about 30 minutes. Remove dough from the refrigerator and cut into bars, I got 8 bars out of my pan. Melt the chocolate chips and the coconut oil together, drizzle the chocolate over the bars. Chill to set the chocolate and enjoy. Keep refrigerated and use within 3-4 days. These bars can also be frozen for longer storage.

I really enjoyed this product, and while more often than not, I still reach for whole, real meals, I’ve found Ka’chava to be super valuable when I’m on the go, or when I just want something smaller to tide me over between meals.

  1. If I won, I’d love the chocolate flavor! I think this would be awesome to make t he snack bars for my kids for school. Fingers crossed!

  2. Both flavors sound amazing–but I’m partial to vanilla. I’m on the go with work a lot and this sounds like a great way to replace those missed meals.

  3. Sounds interesting. Most of the supplement powders I tried make me nauseated, have way too much stevia in them and are just gross.. I was curious about it. They don’t seem to be available in Canada yet. I’ll have to give them a try when they are.

  4. I’d try the vanilla. While I’m a chocolate fanatic, vanilla is easier to mix with other flavors. On days when I’m busy I can also get a protein boost by adding a little to soup or other savory dishes.

  6. I would love the vanilla flavor! I know these things aren’t necessary but if I’m honest I know my diet could use major improvement, so while this doesn’t replace all the healthy food it would make me feel better about those days too busy or too stressed to eat anything but cookies or cereal.

  7. Like you, I usually eat whole food meals but I like the idea of having a super food ingredient at the ready for snacks, shakes and healthy treats pre and post-run! I think vanilla is the most versatile for me.

  8. I’m usually into whole foods, yet like having super foods on hand for the time crunch days. Knowing about this would also give me something else to recommend to people who want to try vegan “fast foods,” or just need alternatives to dairy based power shakes. The chocolate sounds amazing, so I’d like that so I can make up the recipes you posted.

  9. My husband is the shake maker in our house. He has a very physically demanding job, so I’m always trying to pack him full of calories and nutrients. This would be great for him to bring to work with his lunches – and I know he’s prefer the vanilla flavor. 🙂

  10. I drink protein drinks a few times a week, so I always like trying out new brands and flavors and keeping some variety in the “mix.” That said, my default flavor is always chocolate. Essentially, when in doubt, go with chocolate.
